If it is that one is going out for Christmas shopping, one should be prepared to go the mattresses. This simply means, going or preparing for a war, from "The Godfather," anyone should be familiar.
It does not mean that one has to literally to go to war, but one would have to be ready to face the consequences of the situation at hand.
During, Christmas, when "going to the mattresses," one would simply need to be triumphant, else one would end up buying the things that they would surely regret.
